TechNote #005

Known Issues and Problems with a2basicTranslator - current version 0.9
Applies to the a2basicTranslator application, version 0.9.
Posted 2004-05-02, last revised 2004-06-02.

This technote is a list of the known issues with the current release of a2basicTranslator (version 0.9).

Program listings may contain artifacts from extra bytes.
Sometimes the resulting program listing may contain artifacts which appear in the form <0xFF> in a line of the program, where FF would be any hex code that does not correspond to any Applesoft BASIC command or normal ASCII text. These artifacts are the result of extra "hidden" characters embedded in the original program listing, which would usually cause the program to fail when it was run in the original BASIC interpreter and that line was reached (unless the extra character was inside a quoted string).

Some program files with errors in the file format can not be translated.
While this 0.9 version should be able to translate any uncorrupted program correctly, some program files may contain errors or corruption that will prevent the file from being translated. Some programs with minor types of errors such as corrupted bytes within program lines or lines with duplicate line numbers may be translated successfully (although the resulting listing will reflect those errors). The forthcoming 1.0 version provides more control over the translation process, allowing programs with more serious file format errors to be translated as well, however parts of that functionality rely on a framework which is not yet ready for public distribution. Once the necessary work on that framework has been completed, the 1.0 version will be distributed through the same channels as this release, although there is no firm date when that will occur (which is the reason why this older build of the application has been released).

a2basicTranslator 0.9 does not support printing program listings.
If "Print" is selected from the menu (or the equivalent keyboard shortcut is used), nothing will happen. Support for printing had not yet been implemented in the 0.9 version. Saved a2basic files are text files which can be opened in TextEdit and printed normally, if desired.

This technote will be updated as any reported issues are confirmed, and as updates are released.
